The Ettes, Shake The Dust

The Ettes are a three-piece rock band from Los Angeles whose debut album Shake The Dust was released last month on one of my favorite labels, Sympathy for the Record Industry. The Ettes features Lindsay "Coco" Hames on guitar and vocals, Maria "Poni" Silver behind the drums, and Jeremy "Jem" Cohen on bass.

Recorded with Liam Watson (the White Stripes' Elephant) at Toe Rag Studios in London, England over a few week's time, Shake The Dust is a great garage rock album with one foot firmly planted in 1950-60's rock and the other foot planted within a modern punk vibe. The disc contains fourteen tracks full of high energy and fuzzed-out guitars, all wrapped up together with lead singer Lindsay "Coco" Hames' intoxicating vocal attack. All of the tracks on the album hover around the two minute mark, which keeps everything fresh and is the perfect length for their hard-driving sound. Check out two songs from Shake The Dust below.

The Ettes have a few dates left on their current tour, and they will be heading back to the UK in the near future for a tour there. Keep up with them at, and you can purchase the album through Amazon, iTunes, or any happenin' record store.

I caught Portland's The Village Green during a stop in Austin on their recent tour in support of their new album Feeling the Fall. Here's a little info about the artist from Amazon:

"Welcome to the world of Portland‘s the Village Green. In the few short years that the band has been in existence, they’ve kicked up frenzy. Named after the Kinks’ classic The Village Green Preservation Society, this rock outfit, duly inspired by the aforementioned, but then perhaps every other groovy thing to have come out of Great Britain between ’66 and ’73, has tuned out and tuned, er… turned off and… oh, bloody hell, turned on most of their Pacific Northwest with stellar shows, packed to gills, tons of good press saying much of what we’re trying saying here (but, better) and some fabulous radio play. What more do you need?"
