Today I watched the 'Horns defeat Nebraska, previewed a bunch of local music that I'll be featuring over the next few weeks, and made a few song mixes. I had told a friend that I would make her a playlist of songs for a soiree that she was having, and then ended up just making a few lengthy mash-ups of several different songs. You can download one of these said mash-ups below if you're interested. I titled it Twenty and Change, because it runs just over twenty minutes.

mp3: Twenty and Change

Here's what is on it:

Ghostland Observatory - Edge of Town (more)
Wolfmother - Woman (MSTRKRFT remix) (more)
Girl Talk - Friday Night (more)
Prototypes - Who's Gonna Sing? (more)
The Whitest Boy Alive - Fireworks (more)
Brazilian Girls - Jique (more)
The Octopus Project - Psychic Swelling (more)
LCD Soundsystem - 45:33: Nike+ Original Run (more)

DJ Never Forget, 2nd Class: The Story Of A Laptop DJ
Brooklyn's steel-trap-minded DJ Never Forget has a new mix for your consideration, and it is titled "2nd Class: The Story Of A Laptop DJ". Below are a few words from the creator...

"Stuck somewhere between ipod and vinyl, lies the laptop dj. Neither a selector nor old school, the laptop dj languishes in a world of 0’s and 1’s, able to mix, but never taken seriously. While able to obtain certain status, there is a glass ceiling they must watch their wax brethren through as they obtain international fame and fortune. Currently, there is a raging debate regarding the laptop djs place in the world. They are consumed by their need to prove that they too have an identity all their own. No longer complacent, their voices are being raised."

The mix clocks in at 34:54, so obviously it is large download. The tracklist is as follows:

Always Something Better (Trentemoller Remix) Trentemoller
La Ritournelle (Metronomy Mix) Sebastien Tellier
Yours To Keep ft Annie Teddybears
Computer Heat Cansei de Ser Sexy
I Dont Feel Like Dancing (Linus Loves Vox) Scissor Sisters
Muscle Cars (Freeform Five Remix) Mylo
The Party's Crashing Us (I Am The World Trade Center Mix) Of Montreal
Trick or Treatz (South Central Remix) Metronomy
Mama's Room (Weird Science Mix) Under the Influence of Giants
Standing In the Way Of Control (Soulwax Nite Version) The Gossip
Whoo! Alright-Yeah...Uh Huh The Rapture

For previewing purposes, listen to the final section of the mix.

The Ettes, Shake The Dust
The Ettes are a three-piece rock band from Los Angeles whose debut album Shake The Dust was released last month on one of my favorite labels, Sympathy for the Record Industry. The Ettes features Lindsay "Coco" Hames on guitar and vocals, Maria "Poni" Silver behind the drums, and Jeremy "Jem" Cohen on bass.

Recorded with Liam Watson (the White Stripes' Elephant) at Toe Rag Studios in London, England over a few week's time, Shake The Dust is a great garage rock album with one foot firmly planted in 1950-60's rock and the other foot planted within a modern punk vibe. The disc contains fourteen tracks full of high energy and fuzzed-out guitars, all wrapped up together with lead singer Lindsay "Coco" Hames' intoxicating vocal attack. All of the tracks on the album hover around the two minute mark, which keeps everything fresh and is the perfect length for their hard-driving sound. Check out two songs from Shake The Dust below.

mp3: No More Surprises
mp3: We Repel Each Other

The Ettes have a few dates left on their current tour, and they will be heading back to the UK in the near future for a tour there. Keep up with them at www.myspace.com/theettes, and you can purchase the album through Amazon, iTunes, or any happenin' record store.

I caught Portland's The Village Green during a stop in Austin on their recent tour in support of their new album Feeling the Fall. Here's a little info about the artist from Amazon:

"Welcome to the world of Portland‘s the Village Green. In the few short years that the band has been in existence, they’ve kicked up frenzy. Named after the Kinks’ classic The Village Green Preservation Society, this rock outfit, duly inspired by the aforementioned, but then perhaps every other groovy thing to have come out of Great Britain between ’66 and ’73, has tuned out and tuned, er… turned off and… oh, bloody hell, turned on most of their Pacific Northwest with stellar shows, packed to gills, tons of good press saying much of what we’re trying saying here (but, better) and some fabulous radio play. What more do you need?"

Covert Curiosity on MySpace...

Hello Hello. I've just finished putting together a MySpace page for Covert Curiosity, and you can take a look at it with a magnifying glass above, or if you're feeling adventurous you can point your browser to www.myspace.com/covertcuriosity to take a closer look. There is not a whole lot there at this very moment, but I will be adding to it over time with pictures, news and other info related to what you hear and read on this blog.

It would be nice to befriend any of you readers out there, whether you're local or tuning in from around the country or from foreign locales in Europe and the surrounding countries. So if you have a MySpace account and a few extra minutes, stop by and say Hello, Bonjour, Hola, Buon giorno, Bore da, or whatever you prefer.

Let it Rain
Seeing as how there is an 80% chance of rain in my geographic location today, I took a little time to compile some of my current favorite songs that are rain-related. I have done this type of compilation once before and many of my friends seemed to enjoy it, and I think that the songs that I chose this time around are even better than my first attempt. All of the songs have titles that have something to do with rain or water, except for the final track "Farewell Transmission" by Songs: Ohia, but since chances are my electricity will go out during the storm and the song opens with the lines "The whole place is dark, Every light on this side of the town, Suddenly it all went down," I thought it was fitting. I even slipped in a song off of the upcoming release by The Walkmen titled "Pussy Cats", which is a recreation of the 1974 album by Harry Nilsson that featured production by John Lennon. You can find more info about that disc here.

You can listen to each individual song below, or download the mix as a .Zip file by clicking here. Listen, enjoy, and always remember to wear a raincoat.

1. Andrew Bird The Water Jet Cilice
2. Sunset Rubdown Swimming
3. The Walkmen Many Rivers To Cross
4. The Detroit Cobras It's Raining
5. KT Tunstall Under The Weather
6. The Beta Band Dry The Rain

Here and there...
Things have been busy in my little corner of the world lately, and there will be a few noticable changes happening at Covert Curiosity over the next few weeks. I'm redesigning and upgrading the entire site, going through a new setup with my file-hosting service that will hopefully make previews and downloads a little more reliable, putting together a MySpace page that should be complete soon, and adding a few other tweaks just to make everything more user-friendly. Stay tuned...

In the meanwhile I have a few more local bands for you to check out that I have been digging on recently.

The Lemurs

A close friend was driving along and heard The Lemurs on the radio and called me and said that I should check them out. So I headed over to The Lemurs on MySpace, listened to a few tracks and then felt inclined to spread the good word right here. This five-piece has just had a CD release party for their new self-titled disc, and I bet if you catch one of their upcoming shows you could pick it up for a small fee.

Curious about Clinic
You can never over-value originality. The Liverpool-based band Clinic have been living and breathing originality on every album they have produced since their inception in 1997. Clinic consists of Ade Blackburn (keyboard, melodica, vocals), Brian Campbell (bass, flute, vocals), Hartley (guitar, clarinet, keyboards), and Carl Turney (drums, piano, backing vocals). They have released three albums on the London independent record label Domino Records, as well as a compilation of their first three EP's. Their fourth full-length album titled Visitations will be released on October 16th in the UK, followed by two separate North American releases, first on iTunes on October 24 and then a Deluxe CD release which will include an additional track on January 23, 2007.

Visitations is one of the best albums that I have heard of 2006, and you can preview and pre-order the album as well as find other valuable information by clicking here.

Austin Artist: LIONS
"They drop the pedal and provide a full-frontal assault with psychedelic-tinged rock that will blow you away." That's what the Austinist had to say about LIONS, the four-piece rock and roll group from Austin, TX. What I remember thinking after seeing them live for the first time was that it felt like someone had punched me in the face. For the past year and a half LIONS have been taking their brand of rock and roll to clubs all over the state of Texas and beyond, while also releasing their debut EP titled Volume One and performing at the SXSX music conference. Formed from the sudden breakup of former Austin band The Good Looks, LIONS are quickly planting their own seed and stomping into new territory.

I recently sat down with Matt (vocals, guitar) and Trev (bass) to get a better idea of what LIONS is all about..

I have seen the term 'metal' used a few times to describe the band, is that accurate?

M: No, we're a very spirited rock & roll band that has infuences in the 70's, as well as current music. Some people throw the term 'metal' around with us, but that's kind of shaming to metal music because we don't sound like Slayer or Mastadon or similar bands, because we're rock & roll and not metal. Our guitars are heavy and distorted, and that's probably why that term pops up to describe our sound.

How was the band formed?

T: Matt and I have been friends for a while. When he was in The Good Looks I met Mark of The Rockland Eagles and I told him that I was a bass player, soon after that we played a few shows just as a side project, with Matt Mark and I. Soon after The Good Looks broke up Matt called me, and said that he and Jake, the drummer of The Good Looks, were starting something new. I hadn't met Austin, our guitarist, prior to that.

M: Austin's girlfriend had worked with my previous band, and all I really knew about him at the time was that he was this weirdo guitar player.

T: Yeah his approach is very mathy and avant-guard, which is great for the band because he comes from a perspective that is really out there and he brings it into a rock context, which works really well.

So how did you go about forming your sound?

M: It all came together really quickly. We had this show with Fu Manchu, and that was our first show, and it was within a three-week period when we had formed the band to when we had the show. So we didn't have much time to evaluate the songs we had created, so at that point we all just said "Fuck it. This sounds cool, let's do it." In fact we got into SXSW on the strength of our live show, we didn't even have a record out at that point. We recorded a live show that we did and sent that into them, and they accepted us just on the strength of that. That was awesome, we gained a lot of momentum as a band from that experience.

You seemed to gain a following in Austin pretty quickly..

M: It's a good thing if you can keep your ground and not try to be more than what you are. There are many bands in town that do well, but they're not pretending to be living some posh rock & roll cliché lifestyle. We go on tours and stuff but we're regular people with normal jobs, and we don't try to be any bigger than what we are which is a local band that's doing well and are able to go on tour and play good shows with good bands.

What has touring been like?

T: It's a lot of fun but also a lot of work. There's always long stretches of road and rough moments, but it's always a rush to go to a new city and perform in front of a bunch of new people and have them get off on it.

M: There's always ups and downs out on the road, for any band. Like once we played a great show in Boston to a big crowd and sold a bunch of CDs and merch, and then drove through to Ohio to play a gig and the there was hardly a crowd there. We went to Jackson, Mississippi and played a crazy show at a really cool venue that was jam-packed, and the crowd was really intense. Some guy from Jackson saw us at SXSW and he was apparently like a town crier or something, and he brought out all these crazy rockers who were screaming in our faces throughout the entire show and it was completely insane. They had booze everywhere out on the bar and they had all these weird couches and we ended up just crashing in the club. It was nuts. Shows like that really make it worthwhile. We have some cool video from that show that we might put out at some point.

What are your thoughts on the music scene in Austin?

T: I've only been here for a few years, but my perception of the scene is that people who are involved in it, both fans and artists, these people get a lot of excitement and inspiration from it. Musicians can go out pretty much any night of the week and see another band or artist perform and then take those influences and experiences and think about them and gain inspiration from that. All of the good things that are happening musically just continue to push the scene forward.

M: There has been an influx of great musicians and bands in Austin over the past few years, and people here don't really care what the print press has to say about music, because there is so much going on in Austin that people can go find themselves. Ghostland Observatory is a good example. They haven't gotten much written exposure, not even locally, but the other night I had to wait in line for 45 minutes to get in the door, and I was on the guest list. I'm telling you man, I've been here for six years and I've never seen such pandemonium at Emo's. There were people walking up and down the sidewalk holding their fingers in the air trying to score tickets like it was a fucking Grateful Dead concert or something. Eventually the big print press in town like The Chronicle are going to have to come to terms with the fact that there are many good bands around who are working hard and being successful because the people of Austin who are into the music scene have a strong voice, and are discovering other ways of finding out what's really happening. The ease of finding bands and music through the internet has been great for local artists and the Austin music scene in general. First because it's so much easier to find than it used to be, and also because now people can make their own decision about a band without having deal with any organization's agenda, be it political or pressure from advertisers or whatever.

What's in store for the band over the next few months?

M: We're doing a tour in California and the pacific northwest pretty soon and then we'll be working on the new album between doing a few regional dates, and then a big New Year's eve show in Austin. It feels great to be able to tour right now, because we're doing well enough to be able to finance everything and people really embrace us as a live band. It's important for us right now to get out there and just do it, as opposed to being in a studio writing songs.

Orchestral White Stripes
Good news for White Stripes fans and/or fans of orchestra music, Jack White's music has been given the classical treatment, and the project is called ALUMINUM.

"ALUMINIUM is an album of avant garde orchestral recordings of music written by Jack White of The White Stripes. It was recorded between August 2005 and February 2006 at Intimate Studios in Wapping (London), using a specially assembled orchestra comprising many of the UKs finest young classical musicians.

The album will be available exclusively through the Aluminium website as a numbered limited edition of 3,333 CDs and 999 LPs. The download format will not be limited, and will come with an electronic booklet. The album will be available for pre-order on November 6th, 2006."

All pressings will come with accompanying artwork from Rob Jones, a long time collaborator with the White Stripes, and these pieces are part of a wider Rob Jones exhibition which is currently showing at the Richard Goodall Gallery in Manchester. Selections from this album have also been included into a performance by choreographer Wayne McGregor that will take place at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden this November.

Spoon, Live at Emo's
Spoon recently took a short break from their busy schedule to play two shows in their home-state at the White Rabbit in San Antonio and at Emo's in Austin, respectively. Calling it a "busy schedule" may be a bit of an understatement considering the following:

- Spoon is currently in the studio at work on their new album, which is said to be "largely about mid-century modernity, busting off, and world politics." spoontheband.com

- Spoon lead singer Britt Daniel, who relocated to Portland some time ago, is currently hard at work on a solo album that will be released sometime in the future. On top of that he recently collaborated with Lost in Translation soundtrack contributor Brian Reitzell to provide the musical score for the upcoming motion picture Stranger Than Fiction, which stars Will Ferrell and was directed by Marc Forster, whose previous films include Monster's Ball and Finding Neverland.
