Auto Body at Club de Ville

Our old friends Auto Body are back in town tomorrow night to melt some faces at Club De Ville. The duo assures me that they will be adorning the venue in "a shit ton" of bright lights and heaters to facilitate a perfectly molten environment. The show will be done in a Cirque du Christmas theme, with a portion of sales benefiting the Christmas Bureau of Austin's Adopt-A-Family Program. Costumes are encouraged, and will grant you $6 off the door! Bird Peterson and With an Orange will get the party started.

Date: Sat Dec 18th 2010
Venue: Club De Ville 9:00pm
Tickets and more details here

Auto Body consists of Felix Moreno (of the Chicago-based Future Rock) and hometown hero Tibaut Bowman (DJ Thibault). Armed with a war chest of synthesizers, samplers, and a bass guitar, they create a familiar indie-electro sound influenced by the likes of Daft Punk, Ghostland Observatory, and MSTRKRFT. Their seven-song debut Priest Party is available here. They sent over a new song called "Touch" that will be on their next album...

Video: Smith Westerns

Chicago's Smith Westerns will release its sophomore LP, Dye It Blonde, on Fat Possum on Jan. 18. The record was produced by Chris Coady (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, !!!, TVOTR, Beach House, etc.) Full of beautiful colors, the video for the first single "Weekend" was directed by Focus Creeps and gives you an idea of what a typical weekend is like for the band in their native Chicago. Smith Westerns will be in Austin on February 7 for a show at Emo's.

Show Review: Mister Heavenly

Monday night curious fans flocked to The Scoot Inn to see for themselves if Mister Heavenly was worth all the buzz. Fans overflowed into the street while chatter concerning Michael Cera rushed through the crowd. Undeniably a good portion of the crowd was obviously drawn by the allure of the awkward star of Superbad, but Cera may just be filling in as a touring bassist for the new supergroup's first tour.

While flashing his camera phone incessantly, I overheard a neighboring fan inquire if “the guy on keyboard” is “that dude from [some random] movie.” Not quite -- that’s Ryan Kattner (better known as Honus Honus of Man Man). Honus and Nick “Diamond” Thornburn (Islands and formerly Unicorns) trade off as duel lead vocalists. Together they meld the distinct sounds of Islands and Man Man into an unique brand of “doom-wop.” The two balance one another out in the perfect combination -- Diamond is the dreamy lead guitarist to Honus Honus' darker, manic growls and jangly, hammering keyboard instrumentals. All the while Joe Plummer (The Shins and Modest Mouse) steadily keeps the beat as Cera, aside from his ice-breaking joke (“Anyone here from Austin?”), remained focused on his new role as bassist.

They turned out an hour long set full of poppy jams and a quick encore. Cera took to the piano in a joking manner and staggered into a circus type jam, which evolved into a heartfelt cover of Daniel Johnston’s, “True Love Will Find You In The End,” as the others slowly crept back on stage and Honus picked up Cera’s bass.

Mister Heavenly capture and craft a fun, accessible, throwback sound -- a tolerable, lovable boy band with jammy breakdowns in playful songs about girls and love. It’s a simple format, tried and true, and they pull it off with a fresh energy. The project is certainly fresh and their future is uncertain, but shit, that’s all part of the excitement! They've signed a deal with Sub Pop, so expect an official release sometime soon.

In a brief reunion after the show, Kattner explained that Diamond played all the bass parts on their album, but thought of Cera when they decided to go on tour. Diamond and Cera met when Cera appeared in a video for Islands, which is kind of funny, because oddly enough Honus is pals with Cera's ex, Charlyne, from when she appeared in a video for Man Man! All in all, it's that sense of fraternity and casualness that truly makes this project so enjoyable.

Video: Dead Confederate

The official music video for "Run From The Gun", from Dead Confederate's latest album SUGAR. Video directed by Scott Carney and Ryan Daly. The band will be performing the classic 1975 Neil Young album Tonight's the Night in four Georgia cities around the Christmas and New Year holidays, with a 2011 European tour in the works. Go here for details.

Monahans 2010 Recordings

Austin's own Monahans just released the final installment in their monthly recording series titled "2010 Recordings." The tenth and final song is called "Seabirds", and includes vocals by Sinead O'Connor.
About the song:
Drummer Roberto Sanchez and his family took a trip to Ireland earlier this year, and he was inspired by the landscape enough to write a beautiful sketch of what was to become "Seabirds". Upon returning to Austin, the band layered upon Rob's sketch in the studio and then added lyrics. It became clear that the one thing missing was a voice. Sinead O'Connor's voice to be exact. One thing lead to another, and the song found it's way back to Ireland, where Sinead graciously contributed her vocals to the song, and the vision of the original sketch was complete.
The "2010 Recordings" are FREE downloads until December 31st, but may be released as a collection for purchase in various formats at a later date. The current Monahans lineup includes Ramble Creek studio engineer/producer Britton Beisenherz, Roberto Sanchez and Greg Vanderpool (both former Milton Mapes members), and longtime Spoon bassist Joshua Zarbo.

Preview: Mister Heavenly at Scoot Inn

There's not much to be known about Mister Heavenly aside from their all-star, rocking roster which boasts Honus Honus (Ryan Kattner) of Man Man, Nick Diamond of Islands and Joe Plummer of Modest Mouse, and their sometimes bassist Michael Cera. While they've recently been signed with Sub Pop, it seems like the crafty quartet took to the road without much publicity, knowing full and well that their combined star power would turn heads. Surely enough, I'll be heading to The Scoot tonight to check out the curious collective.

Hungry Hearted's Top 10 of 2010

Hungry Hearted writes for Covert Curiosity

There were many enjoyable releases that delighted my senses in 2010 & narrowing down a mere ten favorites has been hard, but the following held strong in my go-to rotation throughout the year. So here we go, complete with links to A/V supplements, as per usual.

1. Twin Sister, Color Your Life — like a spring fling that unexpectedly lingered through fall, I’m completely smitten by their sophomore EP. Breathy vocals & soft, shuffling beats. I’m way into it.

2. The Black Keys, Brothers what else can I say? Dan & Pat have an amazing, minimalistic chemistry built on gritty rock n’ roll. Sure they invited a couple other dudes along for the ride this time around, but the dynamic duo remain the focus while consistently keeping things raw & bluesy. Simply put, it’s soulful & sexy.

3. Beach House, Teen Dreamlofty vocals & soothing melodies. I’m pretty sure the comforts conjured by this album are the equivalent to having an actual beach house. Sweet escapism.

4. The Morning Benders, Big Echo — this album really won me over through the year. Eventually, I fell hard & I remain completely captivated by the large orchestrations & full harmonies.

5. Dum Dum Girls, I Will Be — These broads are all about quick, throwback hits. They deliver with sassy style & sultry, layered sing-a-longs. Their “blissed out buzz saw” strikes an irresistible chord of nostalgia.

6. Sleigh Bells, Treats — this duo produce hard-hitting, energy-packed tracks that combine elements of ferocity & femininity. This album may be the perfect pick me up; the musical equivalent to a strong cup of coffee.

7. Yeasayer, Odd Blood — Weird & wonderful. Completely unique & somewhat overwhelming, but shit, sometimes you just need to get your mind blown.

8. Local Natives, Gorilla Manor — I’ve always been a sucker for bros killin’ it with sweet harmonies. Their structure is simplistic & solid.

9. Magic Man, Real Life Color — I’m still fascinated by this debut production. Their music is intimate & endearing, with a gentle quality I can’t deny.

10. Arcade Fire, Suburbs — this is an amazing concept album that just can’t be ignored. They’ve created songs that are huge, yet accessible, with content that taps into the human condition. Don’t get me started.

* * *

…and honorable mentions, because fifteen is easier than ten —

Tom Caruana - Enter The Mystical Chamber, Adam Haworth Stephens - We Live On Cliffs, White Denim - Last Day of Summer, Tallest Man on Earth - The Wild Hunt, & LCD Soundsystem - This Is Happening
