The Night Beats are a Seattle-based trio who play the devil's music. Specifically, psychedelic blues with a touch of R&B. If the Black Keys or White Stripes had grown up being huge fans of classic Texas psych like the 13th Floor Elevators, they probably would have sounded something like this.
Vocalist/guitarist Lee Blackwell started out a few years ago in the Dallas-based blues rock band White Light Fever, forming the Night Beats in 2009 when he and drummer (and former Austinite) James Traeger set up shop in Seattle. They became a trio with the addition of bassist Tarek Wegner, and released their debut EP in 2010 via Chicago's Trouble In Mind Records (Ty Segall, Fresh & Onlys.)
These guys just played Austin Psych Fest for the second straight year, and dipped into the Do512 Lounge for a quick session while they were in town. Here they are playing a new one from their forthcoming debut album, scheduled for release on June 28, 2011.
The Reverberation Appreciation Society is adding to their repertoire by releasing The UFO Club / Night Beats split 10 inch featuring 4 tracks from The UFO Club on the A side and 4 tracks from The Night Beats on the B side. The UFO Club is a collaboration between Christian Bland of The Black Angels and Lee Blackwell of the Night Beats. The project finds the duo (supplemented by Skyler McGlothlin of Shapes Have Fangs) re-imagining 50s pop through the prism of 60s psych and the combined guitar work of Bland and Blackwell. The name is a homage to the legendary UFO Club of Pink Floyd-era 1960s London. Full details are at austinpsychfest.com.
