Portable Shrines

The friendly people from Seattle's Portable Shrines Collective recently sent me a copy of their vinyl-only compilation, Portable Shrines Magic Sound Theatre Vol. I. The double LP features rare and exclusive tracks by eighteen garage, psych, and experimental bands from the Pacific Northwest and beyond. The compilation features heavy hitters AFCGT and Kinski (Sub Pop), Eternal Tapestry (Thrill Jockey, Not Not Fun), as well as tracks by a host of up-and-coming Northwest psych acts including Night Beats, Midday Veil, This Blinding Light and Blood Red Dancers. The deluxe gatefold packaging features artwork by Aubrey Nehring, Emily Pothast, Garek Druss, Dewey Mahood and Steve Quenell.

Here's some sounds from the compilation:
And a little background:
"In early 2009, tired of being virtually the only two people in attendance at some of the most exciting rock shows to come through town, Seattle music fans Aubrey Nehring and Darlene Nordyke founded the Portable Shrines Collective, a DIY organization devoted to the promotion of psychedelic, garage, and experimental music. In addition to assembling local bills for nationally touring bands and providing custom projections and poster art, Portable Shrines currently hosts a bi-weekly DJ night, publishes a blog, and produces Escalator Fest, an annual multimedia happening bringing together bands, psych DJs, and video artists."
They made it to our neck of the woods for Austin Psych Fest, and you can check out their recap at portableshrines.com/blog. One of their featured bands, Midday Veil, will be playing their first ever Austin show at Emo's on Monday, May 16 with No Mas Bodas, OS OVNI and Chris Catalena and the Native Americans.
