Sights & Sounds:
Since planting themselves in Austin, Texas in the summer of 2010, Knifight has been distinguishing themselves as a premiere act in the indie-electronic scene. Formed in 2002 as a solo IDM/noise project of singer John Gable, Knifight has slowly evolved into a fleshed-out quartet of four distinct songwriters, producers and instrumentalists. Referencing the melodic tendencies and dancy electronics of Xiu Xiu, New Order and LCD Soundsystem along with the kind of guitar and bass bombast that brought post-punk to arenas, the members of Knifight have created music that is both introspective and widely accessible.
Known for their intensely energetic live performances, Knifight has had the opportunity to play official showcases at both SXSW 2011 and SXSW 2012 in addition to being asked to open for the likes of Future Islands, Active Child, Com Truise, White Denim and The Octopus Project among others. On May 18, 2012 the band released the IN THE FIRE EP, a preview of their anticipated debut full-length record due out fall 2012.
Formed initially as the moniker for singer/songwriter Jared Boulanger’s solo recording project while living in Houston, Texas, upon the completion of a completely self-recorded debut album The Meat of the Fruit (2008) , Boulanger followed long-time friend Chris Page to Austin, TX with the intention of creating a performing band together. There they recorded their first collaborative effort, second album Received in Bitterness (2009). After a brief East Coast tour in support of the album, the band recorded 7-inch single, Never Mix, Never Worry which displayed a new direction for The Sour Notes’ characteristically evolving sound. Later that year, multi-instrumentalist Elaine Greer joined the band during the recording of their third album It’s Not Gonna Be Pretty which was released in January 2010 to much critical acclaim. Following a 2-week tour in support of the album, The Sour Notes were selected as an official showcasing artist at the 2010 SXSW Music Festival, and spent the majority of 2010 playing shows in and around the US including the Free Press Summer Fest in Houston, Pitter Patter Fest in Toronto and the CMJ Music Marathon in New York. At the turn of 2011, The Sour Notes toured the East Coast, released the 7-inch single 'Hot Pink Flares' as well as their 4th album 'Last Looks', which features contributions by orchestral pop band Mother Falcon.
Burgess Meredith is a 60’s-influenced rock & roll band located in Austin, Tx. The band pays tribute to the late great actor and was formed by Josh King (the Lemurs) along with John Vishnesky (Bell Curve) and long time friend Jesse Hester (the Polyphonic Spree and Sweet Lee Morrow). Members also include vocalist Deidre Gott, bassist Blue Mongeon and Austin producer and engineer Danny Reisch.
Little Brave is the new alias of Stephanie Briggs. Stephanie has been performing since 2000, first in Rodger Wilko releasing 3 albums, then as Stephanie Briggs releasing 2 albums, and now as Little Brave. She released her third album, Wound & Will, on March 5, 2011, under the moniker Little Brave. Stephanie recently stepped into the studio to create an EP with producer Matt Noveskey. The EP is set to be released by Fall 2012.
Royal Forest formed as Loxsly in 2004, and in 2010 rechristened themselves Royal Forest with the release of a self-titled EP. They’ve played dozens of shows throughout Texas, a handful of U.S. tours, and showcased at the CMJ Music Marathon (2009), the SXSW music festival (2007, 08, 09, 10, 11), and Austin’s Fun Fun Fun Fest (2010). Recent tracks like “Civilwarland” and “Courtesy in Decline” branch into harder-hitting guitar rock that builds upon the sound they’ve become known for: Syncopated snares, layers of warmth, wistful vox, and heady harmonies.
