The Golden Dawn

It's a a small, small world. A good friend of mine recently moved into the house that one of the guys from The Golden Dawn grew up in. A few days ago he (Billy Hallmark) just happened to be in the neighborhood, and stopped by the house for a little nostalgia. Hallmark, whose father was a member of The Blue Bonnet Boys had a lot of interesting stories to share about Austin in the 60s, and all of the people who stayed at/played in this house back in Austin's psychedelic heyday.

The Golden Dawn formed in Austin in 1966, and shared the same label as The 13th Floor Elevators. A few months after the release of the 13th Floor Elevators' "Psychedelic Sounds" debut, the Dawn had finished their debut album "Power Plant", but it didn't see the light of day until the following year in favor of the Elevators' second album "Easter Everywhere." The band - George Kinney (voc, guitar), Tom Ramsey (lead guitar), Jimmy Bird (rhythm guitar), Bill Hallmark (bass), and Bobby Rector (drums) - broke up soon after the album's release in 1968.

The title of the album Power Plant, which the Golden Dawn recorded when they where just teenagers, is obviously a double entendre. The band members were all piled into a bus, cruising around Austin, when they passed by the Austin Power Plant. They were smoking good, and it all clicked right at that moment. If you are so inclined, you can download the album here.

Golden Dawn will be perform "Power Plant" at Austin Psych Fest this Sunday, April 29.

A Giant Dog

A Giant Dog released their debut full-length album earlier this year via Tic Tac Totally. It is the shit. One of my favorite records of 2012. It plays like the soundtrack to a fist fight. At a party. While there's a whole lot of shakin' going on.

Formed in 2008, the band consists of  lead singer Sabrina Ellis (who also fronts the band Bobby Jealousy), drummer Orville Neeley (OBN IIIs, Bad Sports, James Arthur's Manhunt), bassist Graham Low and vocalist/guitarist Andrew Cashen, who also play in OBN IIIs, and second guitar player Andy Bauer.

A Giant Dog's live show is a sweaty riot. They just opened a few shows for Spoon. You'll also hear one of their songs in the upcoming motion picture Bad Kids Go To Hell. Get on this train.

Sleepy Sun - Spine Hits

The Sleepy Sun album I told you about is out now. And it jams.
The band is playing in Austin tonight at 9 PM at the Mohawk. Join me.

...Recorded under the big skies of the California high desert with Queens of Stone Age and Eagles of Death Metal alumnus Dave Catching, the jams on Spine Hits are alternatingly precision whittled and moodily muscular. Matt Holliman and Evan Reiss’ guitars adroitly move from steamroller heavy to beachside airy and bouncing to interstellar—tinkering with texture and dynamics like never before. Vocalist Bret Constantino sings with a road-toughened, husky soul yowl and hush that occasionally betrays a society-weary frustration but more often hints at a way out. The rhythm section of drummer Brian Tice and Jack Allen is a super-cohesive, tricky, and tough-as-hell unit that keeps the Sleepy train on track as it teeters, creeps and runs wild across the land. - http://www.sleepysun.net/
